Research Laboratory
Directed by Professor Yi-Ming Arthur Chen, the Laboratory of Important Infectious Diseases and Cancer is located on the 6th floor of the Paul Cardinal Shan Medical Building, College of Medicine. The laboratory is equipped with advanced instrumentation, including real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) systems, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping platforms, and luminescence microplate readers. Furthermore, our facility houses the only certified Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory within the College of Medicine, facilitating both intra- and inter-institutional collaborative research involving Risk Group 2 (RG2) infectious biological agents.

Our primary research domains encompass both basic and translational medicine. A core research focus involves elucidating the mechanisms of the glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT) gene in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hepatic metabolic disorders, alongside developing novel small-molecule therapeutics targeting GNMT for the treatment of HCC and pancreatic cancer. Currently, the laboratory is executing a four-year National Research Program for Metabolomic and Genomic Medicine (2026–2030) funded by the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). Concurrently, we are formulating GNMT activators derived from combinations of traditional Chinese herbal extracts to investigate their efficacy in anti-aging and the enhancement of exercise performance. Additionally, our research team is dedicated to linking datasets from the Taiwan Biobank and the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) for comprehensive risk factor analysis. Through these epidemiological efforts, we aim to explore the pathogenic associations between GNMT and other genes involved in the one-carbon metabolism pathway among patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and cohorts occupationally exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
